If your events not captured during a short in-office routine EEG, an Ambulatory video EEG allows for long-term brain monitoring while you go about your daily routine. This extended recording increases the chances of detecting abnormalities and provides a more complete picture of your neurological health.
What is an Ambulatory EEG?
An Ambulatory EEG is a portable version of a standard EEG that records your brain’s electrical activity continuously over 24–72 hours (or longer) while you are at home or performing normal daily activities.
Small electrodes are placed on your scalp and connected to a lightweight recording device that you wear throughout the monitoring period.

Ambulatory EEG is recommended when symptoms do not occur frequently enough to be captured during a routine EEG.

How to prepare for the test
You may take a shower and wash your hair the night before the test but avoid putting any gel or hair products on your hair. If you have hair breeds or extensions, it is preferred that you remove them prior to the test for better placement of electrodes.
How the test works
Electrodes are applied in the clinic, and the recording device is worn continuously for the duration of the test. Patients are encouraged to maintain their usual activities while keeping a log of symptoms.
What to expect
You will leave the clinic with the monitoring device in place. While some adjustments may be needed, most daily activities can be continued.
Patients should avoid getting the device wet, keep a record of symptoms or unusual events, and return for electrode and device removal after the monitoring period.
